Gemstones FAQ

.

What is a gemstone?

A gemstone is a mineral highly sought after for its beauty, durability, and rarity.
A few non-crystalline organic materials are also classified as gemstones such as amber, coral and pearl

What does 'gem's hardness' mean?

Hardness (ability to resist scratching) is a key gemological property of a gemstone and is based on a standard called the Mohs scale, where the higher the Mohs scale number, the harder the stone. It is important to consider your gemstone’s hardness when wearing, cleaning and storing it.
    The Mohs Scale:
Devised by the German mineralogist Friedrich Mohs, this scale is a means of grading the relative hardness of minerals.  Using ten common minerals, Mohs put them in order of their resistance to scratching, placing Talc at 1 and Diamond at 10.

      HARDNESS MINERAL
      10. Diamond
      9. Sapphire, Ruby
      8.5 Spinel
      8. Topaz, Emerald, Aquamarine, Heliodor, Morganite
      7.5 Tourmaline, Garnet
      7. Amethyst, Citrine, Smoky Quartz,
      6.5 Tanzanite, Kunzite
      6. Opal, Labradorite, Moonstone
      5. Apatite
      4. Fluorite, Malachite
      3. Calcite, Fuchsite, Pearl
      2. Gypsum
      1. Talc

How does the gemstone hardness affect the cleaning process of your beloved jewellery?

      • In general, gemstones that are at 7 and above on the Mohs scale can be cleaned with warm water, a touch of mild soap and a soft brush.
      • For gemstones less than 7, prefer a soft cloth.
